Kay was born in Edinburgh in 1954. She was educated at Edinburgh University both as an undergraduate and postgraduate student. Her research focused on child abuse and neglect in 19th century Edinburgh and the emigration of children from there to Nova Scotia.
Kay worked as a psychotherapist in the NHS for 16 years specialising in working with survivors of Domestic Abuse and Child Sexual Abuse. She is retired now and lives in rural Northumberland with her husband and 10 year old whippet, Poppet.

Kay's first three novels: THE DARK EDINBURGH SERIES explores the dark underbelly of the beautiful Scottish capital, these books can be read in any order.
Kay's second series: The Frobisher Family Sage explores the rise of the suffrage movement in the last two decades of the 19th century and into the second decade of the 20th when militancy became a problem for the government and social order. These books best read in order, although each novel can stand alone.
